Chernobyl Wolves Nature has made a surprising comeback in the still severely radioactive area of the 1986 nuclear plant disaster of Chernobyl in the former Sovjet Union. While radiation levels remain far too high for human habitation, the area is alive with gurgling streams, inhabited by huge fish, nesting raptors such as peregrine falcons and white-tailed eagles, deer, moose, bison, wild horses and – wolve packs! Devoid of humans and any human intervention, “the zone” with a radius of 18 miles has re-emerged as a thriving ecosystem despite the radioactivity. Nature wins! Even with highly toxic components, an ecosystem can repair itself. Maybe just the most toxic component has to be kept out: homo sapiens!
