Cherry Red Records started in Malvern around 1970 , they had a record shop in Adelaide house called Bubbles Boutique which was basically a bedroom converted it was brilliant ,at gigs they sold merchandise , shirts , belts , badges , records , old tickets , album covers huge stocks of everything and forthcoming gig tickets in advance , The Winter Gardens rapidly became a national venue with every band you could think of turning up to play there from 1950s to 1999 , The Who , Queen , The Jam , Madness , Mott the Hoople , Motorhead , Hawkwind , Black Sabbeth (based in cradley at the time) Damned , Undertones , GBH , Discharge , The Fall , Joy Division , Selector , Specials , Beat , Belle stars , Bad manners , Stranglers , Barclay james harvest , Thin Lizzy , Steve Harley , , Simple Minds , Drones , Spizz Energi , Cream , New Order , Elvis Costello , Siouxie and the banshees , Blondie , UK Subs , Vice Squad , SLF , Dr Feelgood , Demob , The Cure , Dexys , Rezillos , AC/DC , Pretenders , Generation X , T-REX , Screaming lord such , Moody Blues , Hollies , Lloyd Cole and commotions , Mary Wilson , Jethro Tull , Deep Purple , Nazereth , Yes , Eric Clapton , ELO , Procol Harum , Judas Priest , Ultravox , Buzzcocks , The Ruts , Ozzy Osbourne , Cortinas , Secret Affair , Lambrettas , Combat 84 , Cockney Rejects , Anti Paste , plus tons more great bands from every walk of life , Mark Bolan lived at The Old Rectory in Weston Under Penyard and was a regular to Malvern , The Pretenders were all from Hereford apart from Chrissie Hynde , AC/DC exploded in Malvern to great acclaim ,coupled with Hereford Uniteds success it was paradise ......my view as a youngun...... you entered at the top of a huge flight of steeps past the cloakroom area into the huge pumproom area , to your left were massive bars with so many staff it was unreal , and they were thick as pig shit , the main hall was gigantic , it had an amazing feel , a massive stage , the giant clouds of smoke and dope filled the air , it was boiling hot from 2500 plus bodies going tits to there favorite bands ,at my first ever gigs i was just 13 and got served with Heineken , as my mum ran the cloakroom with her sister i got freebees galore , and the bouncers were all family mates , this era was truly incredible , Malvern was a thriving place with hundreds decending here to live the high life in the metal / punk / skin and ska heydays , free concerts used to pop up everywhere and bands played in bars , pubs , clubs and even school halls it was an unrepeatable 30 years of chaos and success , id have it back tomorrow over the dross and utter shite of todays music and culture
