China abstained, that does not mean they support the the Russian annexation of Crimea. Central Asian republics remained silent, does that mean they support the annexation. Sometimes people should take what the Chinese Government is doing at face value for once. China would face consequence from the West if she backed Russia openly. India, often denounced a poodle of the West, by the Chinese, backed the Russa annexation. People can read the Peoples Daily and Global Times all day, but the fact is China is upset at both the US and Russia. . China really only has a problem with the US, the rest of the Western world, particularly Continental Europe, is not containing China in the Pacific. it does not want to pick between Europe vs Russia. if forced to choose, It will side with EU, its largest trading partner. There is little to be gained by siding with Russia. Russia cant help it in Asia that much Among Chinese nationalist, who usually tow governments line on foreign affairs. The response to the annexation has been negative. Why? Unknown to the author and mot of the commentators here, in 1944 and 1945, Tuvan and Mongolia were respectively annexed and granted independence by the USSR. vs referendum. Sound familiar. These territories had belonged to China since the beginning of The Qing Dynasty. On coming to power, in 1949, the CPC recognized all conquest / annexation made by both USSR and the Russian Empire against China. Recognizing and supporting the annexation of Crimea, would be a step to far even for the current Russophiles in Beijing. Lastly, the Chinese, dont come from Judeo-Christain tradition, for most of their history, they dont see themselves as saviors of the world. There is no Messianic complex. it wont get dragged into a European entanglement just for Putins sake.
