Chomskys response is glib and disappointing. First - humans have rights but we also have a right to defend ourselves against humans and this does not invalidate human rights as a concept so Im not sure why he raises the subject of mosquitoes in such a facetious manner. Also if he is intimating about questions of where to draw the line in terms of what is avoidable, necessary or where animals are sentient or not the answer is that all of the animals routinely exploited are well above any such line that may be drawn - the exploitation of domestic animals is what is being talked about primarily with veganism. Pigs, sheep, goats, cows and chickens and all the other animals exploited are above this line and they are intentionally exploited for unnecessary reasons of taste, tradition and convenience because there are vegan alternatives that render this a crueller and less ecologically and environmentally sound choice. Lastly no-one is suggesting animals be granted *human rights - it is *animal rights (hint in the name) being sought How disappointing to see one of the most lauded public intellectuals of our age make mockery of animal suffering by using such argument ad absurdum as putting lions on trial for killing animals.
