Choosing a different perspective from the super close-up & tight portraits of this alluring gem. Lekking Red avadavats? Male red avadavats use their bright red plumage in addition to a mating dance to attract females. The dance begins with males, a grass stem or feather in their mouth, deeply bowing with feathers erect. Usually the birds sing and hop between bows. Both males and females display. When the birds have paired, they separate from the larger group to build a nest. Red avadavats are monogamous within a breeding season, but no information could be found on potential life long monogamy. Here, very early in the morning, I found at least four mature males and a single female in a lek, the males displaying vigorously and the female with an acute sense of judgment, choosing the best set of genes..... Red Avadavats, Amandava amandava amandava, 3 males & 1 female. Kolkata outskirts. September 2015.
