Chris Hedges said: "This kind of mania for hope is really a kind of sickness because it prevents us from seeing how dire and catastrophic the situation is if we don’t radically reconfigure our relationship to each other and the ecosystem." I believe, the collective inability to see clearly stems from approximately 90 years of advertising and campaigning designed to entrance people from becoming individuated-- the public relations movement spawned then by Edward Bernaise sought to maintain narcissism in society (see BBC documentary "Century of Self"). It was very successful. Now that we have been "dyed in the wool" for so long, the Grunch of Corporate Giants have taken notice that we are vulnerable to manipulation. Hope can be as debilitating as fear. Indeed, the World Bank uses Bernaisian logic when they typically divide penetrated nations along lines of hope and fear. It is a tried and true tactic for imperialists. Therefore, always remain half-way between hope and fear and seek your true self to restore democracy and sustainability.
