Christian (nephew, Cherie’s son) scheduled for surgery to repair - TopicsExpress

Christian (nephew, Cherie’s son) scheduled for surgery to repair right arm (compound fracture/elbow) @ 12:30. He had liver operated on twice Sun night/Mon morning to stop internal bleeding. Surgical opening was never stitched back together. This allowed the body to swell as it needed to. Opening was sealed closed with some type of “vacuum pack”. Plan @ 12:30 is to also sew up surgical opening. Think about when you get a bruise how the bruise is much worse after a couple of days, it turns green, yellow, black and purple. That is what is going on with his lungs at this time: the bruising effect will reduce the flexibility of the lungs and also create fluid. The fluid could become a real problem, much like congestive heart failure. This is why there is a real possibility that he could have a turn for the worse in the next 24 hours. At one time, we thought lungs were punctured but now, we are not sure. All ribs were not broken, only three or four. Blunt force trauma is cause of most lung problems. If things are going well @ lunch time tomorrow, that will be a significant hurdle and prognosis improves. Pray for healing and strength over this time. Next 24 hours are so important. His brain did suffer some bruising. Some liquid did drain off of his head yesterday. It was clear fluid. Pink would have indicated the presence of blood. Cloudy would have indicated infection. Neither of those things occurred which is very good. Everyone feels good about neurological prognosis but until he is awake, no one knows the extent of damage. Christian has other issues but these are the most significant based on my understanding. He is surrounded by an incredible support system. Jay, Cherie and Christian have so many people that love and care for them. One 70+ year old couple drove in from Panama City, Florida last night and Pat’s daughter, Allie, arrived from Fort Hood, Texas. Cherie’s friends are constantly bringing in food; I have not been to the cafeteria once and I’ve been at the hospital now for over 27 hours. (Thanks to Angie for the Sausage Biscuit this morning and to Tonya for the fruit and bagels this morning.) Jay’s employer owns Grant Hospital. They have given us a private hospital room to sleep and shower for as long as needed. What a gift! On another front, my incredible parents were in Columbus yesterday. Dad had his second chemo treatment @ OSU and then we all came to the trauma center to see Christian. Chuck and Linda Morshier are and were an incredible blessing as they drove four hours back and forth from Bellevue and spent another eight hours in the various waiting rooms. Again, I’m moved by the love and support of people. I’m moved by the number of those that love us. No side effects yet from treatment #2. However, his sugar was 274 this morning. Most likely, side effects will begin tomorrow. Jimmy V said that if you laugh, think and cry in one day, that’s a full day. I’ve already had a full day today and it isn’t lunch time yet! God is always listening. Your continued prayers on our family’s behalf are effective and appreciated.
