Christmas In Downtown Comes To Greeneville Tonight Friday, December 5, 2014 by Jim Miller - Radio Greeneville News A variety of events are scheduled to be held tonight in downtown Greeneville as part of the Christmas In Downtown celebration, sponsored by Main Street: Greeneville. *Candlelight, music and caroling on the County Courthouse lawn begins at 5:00 with piano students of Deane Gray and Pam Thacker preforming holiday classics. Tusculum View Chorus under the direction of Jessica Ricker will sing beginning at 5:40 as the crowd joins in to sing more holiday favorites by candle light all the while awaiting the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus, portrayed by Gary and Lizzie Heathcock who will light the Community Christmas tree at 6:00. Santa and Mrs. Claus accompanied by their elf and the Winter and Company Snowflake Fairies will get back on the hay wagon and travel to Town Hall. *The crowd will carol, under the direction of Alan Kobs, their way to Town Hall, at the corner of Church and College Streets where the Town Hall tree, will be lit by Santa himself. The crowd is then invited to go into the lobby where they will enjoy seasonal songs performed by Miss Madison Metcalf. Refreshments will be provided. *Heritage Gardens old fashion tree lot on the lawn at First Presbyterian Church will be where you can see the live Rein-de-llamas provided by Walnut Ridge Llama Farm and make magic food for Santas reindeer with Ethan Myers of Myers Pumpkin Patch and Greenhouses while shopping for fresh Greene County mistletoe. A funnel cake vendor will also be located there. *Public Works and Parks and Rec will provide holiday wagon rides in downtown during the evening with loading taking place mid-block on East Church Street right near the outdoor movie. Be sure to hop on the wagon and carol your way around town. *The merchants will open for shopping and dining. Visit Greeneville Antique Market, Art Space 4 Gallery, Inn Style Boutique, Greeneville Arts Council, Evans Jewelers and Gallery, Richland Creek Gifts, Towne Square Shopping Center, Top Dog Hot Dogs, at the corner of Main and Depot Streets, Catalyst Coffee Company and the General Morgan Inn for special offers and hours. *Take the chill off in the lobby of the General Morgan Inn where a warm beverage reception may be enjoyed while listening to the Tusculum College Jazz Band under the direction of David Price as they preform seasonal classics beginning after the tree lighting at 6:00 pm. *Beginning at 6:30 pm Santa and Mrs. Claus will be inside The Capitol Theatre where famed local photographer, Jerry Hankins and the Kiwanis Club of Greeneville will be taking photos with Santa. The 4 x 6 color photos will be presented in a holiday themed folder frame. Dont miss your chance to have your picture taken with Santa and visit the Capitol Theatre where in the past many a holiday memory were sure to have been made. Make new memories now. *The wall of the Dixie Cleaners building on East Church Street will become a giant outdoor movie screen where Polar Express will be shown beginning at 6:45pm and lasts 100 minutes. There is only one showing so dont miss it. The Polar Express revolves around Billy, who longs to believe in Santa Claus but finds it quite difficult to do so, what with his familys dogged insistence that all of it, from the North Pole, to the elves, to the man himself, is all just a myth. This all changes, however, on Christmas Eve, when a mysterious train visits Billy in the middle of the night, promising to take him and a group of other lucky children to the North Pole for a visit with Santa. The trains conductor along with the other passengers helps to turn Billys crisis in faith into a journey of self-discovery. Bring your lawn chair and blankets to snuggle in and enjoy the movie. Hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn and beverages are on the menu and will be available for purchase from the youth of First Presbyterian Church as a missions fundraiser. *The Andrew Johnson Homestead will welcome in the holidays with candlelight tours of the home provided by the National Park Service. *The Nathanael Greene Museum will host The Olde Greene Christmas Market until 9:00 pm at Fox Park on the corner of South Main and East McKee Streets. The market features holiday items, Christmas music, food and beverage. Admission is free. *The City Garage Car Museum, 210 S Main St, will have Open House with free admission from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. In celebration of the holidays the museum will be decked out with holiday decorations throughout their classic car exhibits. *The 1860s Living History and Dance Society will host a Civil War Christmas Ball from 7:30 to 9:30pm, period dress is not required. The dance will be held in the fellowship hall at Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The church is located on the corner of North Main and Church Streets. A $5.00 fee will be charged for admission to those wishing to dance however visitors are encouraged to observe at no charge. Light refreshments will be available.
