Christopher Nolan proves once again that he is one of our last - TopicsExpress

Christopher Nolan proves once again that he is one of our last great filmmakers. The visuals, the score, the acting, and a revision of a familiar motivation for the story, are all exceptional. A truly epic, enticing and stunning film. Often thought-provoking, Nolan films are the type of films one writes ten-page essays on. It may be about the murkiness of revenge and justice in relation to memory loss (Memento); differences between justice and revenge (Batman Begins); order vs. chaos or moral vs. a nihilistic outlook within society (Dark Knight); or perceptions of reality vs. dreams or questions about how ideas are born (Inception). Nolans films are like literary essays. The special effects are gorgeous. The landscapes, the ships, the interiors, the space, the planets--they all have a certain elegance and sophistication to it. I loved the soundtrack. Moody, foreboding, yet minimalistic, it recalled elements of the soundtrack for Inception, but more subtle, and less tonally intrusive. Much emotional weight of the film is brought out from the soundtrack itself, often taking the place over dialogue to great effect. I also love the lack of sound in space. While the film takes its time in terms of pacing, the action scenes are pretty intense and little surprises that pop up add plenty of suspense. The film takes risks, and plot ideas do take a turn for the surreal, but its fascinating to watch, and leaves quite an impression. This film was even more trippier than Inception! And it’s one of the year best, in my humble opinion.
