Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, Meditation in Action, Talk in New York, NY, 1970, On Individuality: So what is identity then. Where are we looking into this particular identity. If you look into the detail of this identity we dont find anything such as identity as such, as far as it evades, but identity is a collection of many ingredients so to speak. That is th emotions in part, desire, hate, ignorance, but everything is rooted through ignorance because when we try to look into, investigate, this basic formula, the fear itself from, we almost shy to look into what we are. Rather like the first person who recorded his speech in a tape recorder find a way too shy to hear his voice again be played. Or the first person who took, had the experience of seeing his photograph that he finds very difficult to see it, actually his own photograph there. That kind of shyness we like to ignore all together, that kind of ignorance is the ignoring aspect where you refuse to investigate, refuse to see, the fact of the definite facts of these problems. So, that we are really searching for, that is what the (?) of wisdom or enlightenment it is also very strong, opposite that ignoring aspect. That is what is called enlightenment, or awakening process. So other words, the ego, or self, as they used, to escape away, rather if you dont want to face problems, you go to sleep and escape all together. So everything begins from this particular kind of ignoring of its origins, ignoring what we are, but that is the point and very painful process. It mean very much a type of operation process, we need an operation. In this case it comes without any type of anethetics or any type of substitute to cure pain or anything at all, but just a straight operation is needed. Therefore we find it very difficult to go through it when we are faced with the facts of what we are. That is to be one of the basic formula, in this case, of looking into what we are. And the problem with ignorance of course there are various stages of emotions developed, such as like a, developed such as like a, passion or desire. That is that having developed this ignoring quality in ourselves that we wanted to find some kind of comforting process, collecting process, grasping process, having ignored already we would like to create some more kind of security around us, that is the desire of grasping and having created grasping then we would like to defend that, secure that collection. Then hatred or anger develop in order to protect that, in order to secure that, any external defeat or any external attack comes from outside. People like to secure and to preserve that therfore anger develops an so on and so on with other process of emotions develops. But, these emotions are not particularly the emotions of devout and actual emotions, but underlying emotions, and because of it we have to go into details of practice which will free ourselves, but if you are looking for some kind of practices which will free ourselves externally that will be danger, dangerous thing to do, because we have collect already so much security, so much comfort, so much material thing to support this existence of ourselves as such, so therefore any kind of practices involved with a ?super? spirituality could be a golden chain in this case, and therefore one has to be completly honest, and fully realistic purely everything must be concentrated on this, therefore any kind of practices you choose in order to develop glorification of self that could be defeating the (?) of the beginning. So any kind of practice must not involve the collecting process, but all the practices must involve an undoing process, an unlearning process, of trying to unmask, trying to unclothe the collections of someones (?) that is involved. And therefore the practice of meditation is very important.
