Circular No: IR/253/14 Our Ref: HC/14/2 25th September 2014 TO ALL BRANCHES, REGIONAL COUNCILS & REGIONAL OFFICES Dear Colleagues, INTERCITY EXPRESS PROGRAMME Further to my previous Circular No. IR/230/14, 11th September 2014, a meeting took place at Unity House with our East Coast and First Great Western Company Council Representatives, General Grades Committee members, Lead Officer for East Coast and Assistant General Secretary. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the strategy of how to fight the attacks that all grades will be facing by the implementation of IEP trains. The IEP currently includes no buffet car facilities, no guards’ accommodation, Driver Only Operation as well as the outsourcing of maintenance work to Hitachi along with the fact that there are no arrangements to facilitate the transfer of engineering grades and no protection of jobs. The consensus of the meeting was that there needed to be a joint industrial strategy. The General Grades Committee has taken the decision to raise the demands for a safety competent guard on every train, buffet car facilities, safety critical station dispatch staff and no job losses through the relevant Company machinery of negotiation. Any failure by the Companies to agree to these elements will lead to a dispute situation. I am also in the process of arranging a meeting with the Department for Transport over this matter and I will keep you informed of all developments. Yours sincerely Mick Cash General Secretary
