City Cancels Tonight’s Public Meeting on Low Income Housing Project Proposal A meeting to allow residents to ask questions regarding a proposal to build a new low income/Section 8 housing project in the city’s southwest corner was cancelled today by the city. The cancelled meeting had been scheduled for today, 1/12/15, at 6:00 pm in the Council chambers. Despite calling it a “veteran’s village”, documents released by the News Herald stated that only 25% of units would go to veterans, with the other 75% being traditional Section 8/low income available to anyone who qualifies (not just veterans). The plan was to build it on almost the exact same spot where the city torn down a former housing project due to all the crime - a program we paid a special tax for almost 20 years to fund. Despite overwhelming public opposition, we do not believe the project is dead yet. The city agency that officially owns the property could still approve the project at its February meeting. Even thought the city agency (Taylor Community Development Corporation) did vote down the proposal 6-1 at its January meeting, there are some in the city who we believe still strongly support the proposal and we fully expect them to pressure the agency to reconsider and approve the project. Thank you to all the residents who planned on braving the cold today to attend the meeting to oppose this project. Citizens will have to remain vigilant; we may have won this battle, but we doubt the war is over…..
