City Councilman Daniel Dromms Labor Committee colleagues are teaming up against his bill to kill New Yorks horse carriage industry -- and urging the entire body to do the same. In a Friday letter, Civil Service and Labor Committee Chairman Daneek Miller (D-Queens) and his allies urge their fellow lawmakers to consider the proposed ban from the perspective of the 300 families that stand to lose everything if the historic industry goes bust. It is our belief that these workers and this industry should be sustained in Central Park. They welcome tourists to New York. They celebrate anniversaries and Quinceañeras with our constituents. And they do it all in one of the most scrutinized, highly regulated industries, with rarely an incident, Miller writes, along with Democratic Councilmembers Costa Constantinides and Elizabeth Crowley of Queens and Robert Cornegy of Brooklyn... The carriage drivers are proud of the work they do and have done it well; this should be enough reason to keep them here. We need to be realistic about what is being proposed: three hundred New Yorkers could be unemployed at the stroke of a pen, the letter continues... Dromms bill, which would have carriage drivers hang up the reins for new jobs driving green taxis, will be introduced next week and faces a hearing by the Councils Transportation Committee. Transportation is run by Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Manhattan), a strong backer of the Dromm bill. Carriage supporters see the Transportation Committee pick as a blatant end run around Consumer Affairs, which previously handled carriage-related legislation and is run by a Dromm-bill foe, Councilman Rafael Espinal (D-Brooklyn)... But Miller and his allies hope their united front -- which comes ahead of a major multi-union demonstration against the carriage ban planned for Monday -- will help stop the Dromm bill from ever reaching the floor, or, barring that, meeting defeat in a vote...
