City Football Group Confirms Name Change To Melbourne City FC & Confirms David Villa To Play In Hyundai A-League I am honoured to be named Melbourne City Football Club’s Ambassador and be associated to such a great organisation. The owners of Melbourne Heart FC have today announced the renaming of the Club to Melbourne City FC and that New York City FC’s inaugural player and Spanish World Cup winner David Villa will join the Club for a period of the Hyundai A-League 2014-15 season. A prolific striker for club and country, Villa is Spain’s all time top scorer and will play at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He also lifted the La Liga title in Spain for his former club Atletico Madrid this year. Regarded as one of the top players in world football, Villa has won three La Liga titles, a UEFA Champions League title and will represent Spain at his third World Cup this June. The Club was formerly known as Melbourne Heart FC. Melbourne City FC is owned by a consortium involving the City Football Group (80%), which also owns English Premier League club Manchester City FC and Major League Soccer club New York City FC, and the ownership group of Australian National Rugby League side the Melbourne Storm (20%). Based at La Trobe University, Melbourne City FC’s home ground is AAMI Park in Melbourne.
