City University is so fun and informative! Get first-hand, inside knowledge about how your City government works for you! The next session starts in January and applications are now available. (This program has rave reviews from previous attendees and there is always more demand than space.) The New Braunfels City University program allows citizens to experience the workings of their city government first hand. The curriculum is designed to encourage a well informed public and potentially increase their involvement in city committees, boards and commissions. Eleven meetings, and then a graduation dinner, are held over selected Thursday evening’s beginning on January 8, 2015. Programs on City services are provided by the following departments: Fire/ EMS, Municipal Court, Library, Parks & Recreation, Planning & Community Development, Police, Public Works, Support Services and the Airport. New Braunfels Utilities will also be a presenter for the first time this session. “City University is an interactive learning experience,” said Gary Wuest, Human Resources Director. “The hands-on experiences, case studies, site tours, group discussions, and demonstrations provide a unique understanding of municipal operations and promote transparency/open government.”Some graduates of previous City University programs have gone on to serve in the following city organizations: • City Council • Airport Advisory Board • Watershed Advisory Committee • Parks & Recreation Advisory Board • Bond Advisory Committee • Downtown Board • Civil Service Commission • Building Standards Commission • Zoning Board of Adjustment • Transportation & Traffic Advisory Board • Ethics Commission • Watershed Advisory Committee • Community Development Advisory Committee • Golf Course Advisory Board City University applications are available at the Municipal Building, 424 South Castell Avenue, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, or online at nbtexas.org/cityuniversity. Applications for the 2015 series of the free City University program will be accepted at the Municipal Building through 5:00 p.m. on December 12th. Applicants must be residents of the City, or its extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ), and be at least 17 years of age. Space in the program is limited. e
