City of Everett - PRESS RELEASE National Night Out events set for Aug. 5 Join neighbors to help build a stronger, safer community EVERETT – 2014 marks the 31st year of National Night Out Against Crime events throughout the country. This year, more than 20 neighborhood and community events are scheduled in Everett for Tuesday, Aug. 5. “We encourage residents to get to know their neighbors at one of these great events,” said Wendy McClure, office of neighborhoods coordinator. “Neighbors who know each other are more likely to look out for each other, prevent crime, and help each other when emergencies or natural disasters strike.” National Night Out is designed to heighten awareness of crime and drug prevention, generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood relationships and form police-community partnerships to reduce crime. In 1984, 400 communities in 23 states participated in National Night Out. This year, more than 37 million people in 15,325 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada and military bases worldwide are expected to participate. Mayor Ray Stephanson and Police Chief Dan Templeman, as well as members of the Everett City Council, Everett Police Department, Everett Fire Department, Emergency Management division, Office of Neighborhoods and other city staff will participate in celebrations throughout the city.
