City to reduce speeding and curb accidents along A Re Yeng construction areas The City of Tshwane is exploring measures to reduce speeding so as to curb accidents occurring in and around Paul Kruger Street at A Re Yeng construction areas following an incident two weeks ago during which a female worker lost her life. It is alleged that a taxi overtook a car and drove through the construction barriers. The accident happened near Wannenburg’s Scrapyard north of Die Poort. As a result of the accident, speed humps were placed on the northbound carriageways on Paul Kruger Street, near the Paul Kruger Street and Es’kia Mphahlele Drive intersection, and on the southbound carriageway near Wannenburg’s Scrapyard. Due to the amount of complaints received, it was decided that the speed humps near the intersection should be removed, while the City investigates alternative traffic soothing measures. The speed humps on the southbound carriageway near Wannenburg’s Scrapyard will remain while the City monitors the impact of traffic. Should there still be major traffic delays, the speed humps will be removed before the afternoon peak hour. The City is keeping open as many lanes as possible through this area to ease traffic flow, although it also needs to keep motorists, the general public and site staff safe. The City of Tshwane urges motorists to obey traffic rules and to stay within the set speed limit (40 km/h) for the construction area. Together we can ensure the safety of both motorists and site staff during the construction period. We would also like to use the opportunity to apologise for the temporary inconvenience that was caused by the installation of the speed humps. Road users should continue reporting any safety and security measures to the Community Liaison Officer in their area
