Class of 74 1974 – Richard M. Nixon was President, My favorite NFL team the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl 9 to win their 1st of 6 Super Bowl Championships; afros, dashikis, and bell bottoms were the in things back in the day. High school days were filled with emotion and excitement: The great late-night parties, the friendships we lived for and the music we jam too like: Stevie Wonder’s -“Living for the City”; Eddie Kendrick’s – “Boogie down Baby”; James Brown’s – “The Big Payback”; Kool and the Gang’s – “Hollywood Swinging”, and our class song Barbara Streisand’s – “The Way We Were”. We can’t forget the football games on Friday nights, especially the Oak Cliff Super Bowl – SOC versus Roosevelt, and the house parties afterwards had that FUNKY GROOVE! On Saturday nights we went skating at the Shamrock Skating Rink – our froes were dusty, but man DIDN’T WE HAVE FUN! These memories are crystal-clear to this day! The times we live in have changed, but actually things dont change much, and people dont either. I think thats a good thing. Reality doesnt bite as hard at the 40-year mark, despite what people may anticipate. The 40 year high school reunion is just... different. For some of us have traded our football jerseys for blazers; Pom Poms for laptops and a bear suit for a business suit. The kids who seemed like the smartest back then still seem so now. Some who always had someone are single now. Some who seemed like loners in high school are happily coupled up. Some say timing is everything, and so is perception. What we didnt know at 16 and 17 is that the grass is definitely not always greener on the other side. Forty years! We are a generation that has lived through four major assassinations; man’s first steps on the moon; 10 Presidents and witnessed US History when Barack Obama became the first African-American elected President of the United States of America. Happy 40th to all who graduated in the Class of 1974!
