The Boyle Family is a group of British artists including Mark Boyle (1934-2005), Joan Hills (1931) and their children Sebastian and Georgia. In the late 1950s, Mark Boyle and Joan Hills began to produce art according to two principles: 1. Art is an objective investigation of the visible world, and 2. The whole world and all its phenomena are possible subjects. In 1963, the Boyle Family started the Earth Studies. This had them collecting samples of ‘the ground under their feet’ taken from random places around the world and which they hung on walls like paintings. Around that time they also had started experimenting with other media forms like performance, film, photography and projections. The Early Projections are a compilation of projections from chemical experiments that were carried out live including the processes of evaporation, corrosion, combustion and fermentation. They were first exhibited in the 1960s at UFO, the first psychedelic nightclub in London. The presentation of the Early Projections by the Boyle Family is part of the exhibition When elephants come marching in: Echoes of the Sixties in Art Today, created by guest curator Mark Kremer. Boyle Family is een Britse kunstenaarsgroep, bestaand uit Mark Boyle (1934-2005), Joan Hills (1931) en hun kinderen Sebastian en Georgia. Eind jaren vijftig beginnen Boyle en Hills kunst te maken waarin twee principes doorklinken: 1. ‘Kunst is objectief onderzoek van de zichtbare wereld’, en 2. ‘Niets wordt buitengesloten als mogelijk onderwerp’. Vanaf 1963 ontstaan de Earth Pieces: willekeurig over de hele wereld verzamelde uitsneden van grond, aarde of asfalt, die als schilderij of reliëf aan de muur worden gehangen. Rond die tijd gaan ze ook experimenteren met andere media, zoals performance, film, fotografie en projecties. Deze Vroege Projecties zijn een compilatie van projecties van live uitgevoerde chemische experimenten zoals verdamping, corrosie, verbranding en gisting. Deze projecties werden getoond in UFO, de eerste psychedelische nachtclub van Londen in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw. De presentatie Vroege Projecties van Boyle Family is onderdeel van de door gastcurator Mark Kremer ontwikkelde tentoonstelling When elephants come marching in: Echoes van de Sixties in de Kunst van Nu.
