Clients like short copy on their home page. Its a thing these days. But if youre going to be found on a search, there needs to be enough copy for search engines to determine what your page - and your site - is about. Short copy may not do that. If you want to build traffic, provide enough text on your site to create context. Tell your reader and search engines what youre about. It shouldnt be fill or blather, but quality content about you or about what you sell or about what you do. With Google Hummingbird, which looks to associate synonymous meanings to your keywords, you can afford to build relevancy on your page. That provides opportunity to expand your text and usage. Adequate text also provides opportunity to build links to your internal pages within your copy. Internal links are good for SEO (search engine optimization), which means youre showing search engines your site has depth. Thats another plus because it will improve ranking, also good for building traffic. So, how much copy is good? I usually figure anything less that 250 words is useless for a page, including the home page. And they need to be a well managed 250 words. To be really sure, I would say 250 to 400 words. Depending on the reason for your site, more is usually better.
