Our client in Stellenbosch has 3 vacancies for Researchers / Scientists in their Coastal Systems, Ecosystems group focusing on coastal, estuarine and marine processes. They comprise a strong marine science and engineering capability that provides both strategic and operational decision support for the optimal utilisation and sus...tainable development of the coastal, estuarine and marine natural resource base of southern Africa and Africa. They offer: • A vibrant, competent and professional team with many years of experience in undertaking both academic and applied research in coastal, estuarine and continental shelf environments. • An exciting working environment with opportunity to participate in challenging projects related to the science of global change in the following domains: • Marine water quality and hydrodynamics; • Coastal sediment dynamics; • Estuarine dynamics; • Coastal engineering; • Urban coastal management; and • Sustainable development of coastal systems. Requirements: 1. Researcher (Scientist) (2 positions) candidates should have: • A Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. oceanography, applied mathematics or civil/coastal engineering), preferably backed up by a high level of numeracy in sediment dynamics. • Two to three years’ numerical modelling experience of physical and/or water quality processes in the marine environment and demonstrate an ability to produce peer reviewed publications. • An appreciation for coastal engineering issues and a good practical knowledge of, and experience with marine field measurements and data collection, will be an added advantage. 2. Senior Researcher (Scientist) (1 position) candidate should have: • A doctoral degree in a relevant field (e.g. oceanography, applied mathematics or civil/coastal engineering), preferably backed up by a high level of numeracy in sediment dynamics. • Five years or more numerical modelling experience of physical and/or water quality processes in the marine environment and a record of peer-reviewed publications. • Proven leadership abilities. • Established professional networks. • Demonstrate an ability to attract funding and manage large trans-disciplinary research projects. • Be capable of working at the interface between research and development, implementation and specialist consulting with public and private sector clients. • A track record of attracting and mentoring students at all levels. • Ability to interact with clients and stakeholders in order to promote and develop the vision of the Coastal Systems and the NRE business unit. Furthermore, you must: • Be interested in a mixed research and development, and specialist consulting environment. • Have the ability to function independently and as part of a team. • Be self-motivated with excellent communication skills. • Have a can-do attitude. • Have a strong stakeholder focus. • Be able to perform under pressure and manage or contribute to projects within allocated time and budget constraints. Responsibilities: Our client is looking for talented and dynamic professionals to undertake research into coastal, estuarine and shelf processes (hydrodynamics, water quality and sediment dynamics) with a strong focus on the numerical modelling of physical coastal processes. It is the intention to establish an outstanding coastal modelling unit that will contribute to the theory and practice of trans-disciplinary research in the coastal domain. There are currently three (3) positions available within the modelling, forecasting and predicting group. This is an important functional competence that forms an integral part of all research activities in the RG (scenario testing, trade-offs and early warning).
