Coba, a day trip from Valladolid. Set off early and arrived at Coba in good time to avoid feeling like a sheep in a flock which according to Lonely Planet transpires after 11.00 am. Coba reached its peak between 800 and 1100 AD, much earlier than nearby Chitzen Itza. It covers 50 sq Km and once had a population of 40,000. Its architecture is said to resemble Tikal, one of the greatest Mayan cities located in Guatemala.
