College of Liberal Arts Student Professional Development Fund Guidelines 2013-14 STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE FUNDING ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN RESEARCH DAY Deadlines: October 11, 2013 and February 14, 2014 GENERAL GUIDELINES: 1. The fund supports Liberal Arts majors. Minors will be considered if funds are available. 2. No more than one proposal per student will be funded during an academic year. 3. The fund will support the following three student professional development activities. • travel expenses related to student conference presentations • research projects • creative activities 4. The fund does not support internship experiences. 5. The fund does not support study abroad experiences. 6. Funds must be utilized while enrolled as a full-time student at the university. 7. The maximum amount of any award is $500.00 plus conference registration fees where applicable. 8. The fund will not support meals and equipment. 9. The fund can cover travel, fees, accommodations, and supplies, including but not limited to postage, duplicating, access fees, posters, materials, etc. 10. One form must be submitted for each student (no group requests). 11. All professional development activities must be directed by a faculty mentor who will write a letter of recommendation supporting the student’s proposal. THE APPLICATION 1. There will be one application for all three categories. 2. Students who travel must include a travel form and an Off-Campus /Field trip form (on the s: drive) as their budget page. Travel forms should be prepared in consultation with the department secretary and must be signed by the department chairperson. 3. The application should be divided into four sections: • Cover Sheet: Name, year, major, GPA, one- or two-page single spaced description of the professional development activity, including its relevance to student’s course of study and career goals. • Budget Page: A detailed budget page/travel form, including amount of support and signatures from any other funding sources (e.g. department chairperson). • Faculty Recommendation: Letter of recommendation explaining the value and merit of the proposal must be submitted by a faculty mentor. • Permission/Acceptance Documents: Students should attach acceptance letters from conferences, IRB approvals, or any other relevant documentation from organizations/agencies that provide approval or clearance for the activity. 4. Completion Statement: When the student returns from a conference or completes the proposed activity, he or she must submit a one-page narrative explaining the value of the experience. Proof of completion, whenever possible, should be attached to the narrative (conference program, photos, evidence of participation). The original faculty mentor must sign the completion statement.
