College of William & Mary 1861 To obtain a bachelors degree students had to study: Theoretical and practical mathematics, Read 8 books of Euclid, learn plain trigonometry, heights and distances, surveying, algebra, and natural philosophy in relation to the general properties of matter, as well as mechanics, electricity, pneumatics, hydrostatics, and optics; and master the first principles of astronomy. Students were required to take classes in logic, letters, rhetoric, natural law, the law of nations, civil history, law enforcement, and general principles of politics AND have a competent knowledge of geography and ancient and modern languages.
