Come to Taiwan and it wont take you long to realize why English Cram schools have become a multi-billion dollar global industry. Career outcomes and educational attainment are inextricably linked to English competency. Of course, this serves to entrench social divisions in non-English speaking societies; because, as any language learner will attest the only path to acquisition is time, resources and patience. This plight is even more acute for the new wave of children in Taiwan and Korea with local fathers and foreign mothers from neighbouring East Asian countries; who often by primary school arent proficient in their mothers tongue, fathers tongue let alone English. If anyone in Taiwan is keen to volunteer to help these kids learn English let me know. Theres a camp in Guting (info below) from 11/7-14/7 (training); 14/7-18/7 (camp period), 1.30pm-4pm. There is also another being held in Xiangshan 8/1-8/8. Looking in particular for enthusiastic people willing to have fun with the kids. Cheers.
