Coming off of USAs Memorial Day, I was compelled to revisit a passage from Kurt Vonneguts Slaughter House Five: “Well, I know, she said. Youll pretend you were men instead of babies, and youll be played in the movies by Frank Sinatra and John Wayne or some of those other glamorous, war-loving, dirty old men. And war will look just wonderful, so well have a lot more of them. And theyll be fought by babies like the babies upstairs. So then I understood. It was war that made her so angry. She didnt want her babies or anybody elses babies killed in wars. And she thought wars were partly encouraged by books and movies. War is terrible. Memorial Day is a day is to remember the gravity of war-- and all the babies whove died. Because for mamas, every man and woman who dies in war (soldiers, civilians of any nationality) are our babies. Theres nothing to glamorize; only to mourn.
