Commentary by Alexander Bealded Liberian journalist abealded@gmail AN INTERIM GOVERNMENT FOR THE PUL IS THE BEST OPTION By now, the Peter Quaqua leadership should have been no more; how it all happened can all be blamed on irresponsible leadership. Peter Quaqua and his likes at the union failed the Liberian media by being only proactive at engaging government but being reckless at looking at her own organic laws that have the propensity to create chaos like the case at hand. The clause in the constitution ‘One opting for Presidency in the union must be a Bachelor’s degree holder or its equivalent’ is confusing. What is the equivalence of a Bachelor’s degree I wonder? Is it the numerous AA degrees one must have obtained or the reputable institutions one must have worked for? What was in the minds of the framers when they penned this? Be as it is, the leadership has erred; the leadership has brought the integrity of the union into public disrepute. How can we, eight years after be on the verge of looking at our constitution as a nation under President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf with the Liberian media playing a key role, yet at the level of the PUL we close our eyes to archaic laws that tend to confuse the public. Lest we forget, Peter Quaqua and his co-workers should by now not be in charge of the Press Union of Liberia. An interim arrangement must be immediately set up that will lead the union through the court proceeding at hand and subsequent election. Any attempt not to adhere to this advice, Mr.Quaqua and team will be proceeding illegally. As a body that serves as the watchdog of society, let’s not forget, we are being watched as well and we can’t afford to run our union, our only proud as a ‘BOYS SCOUT.’ This union is for every journalist and not for a few to decide as has always been; the change we all yearn for must start with us and the reform of our constitution should be the best way to go.
