Tomorrow is Veterans Day.Most of my family knows I am a veteran.8 years U.S.Army,4 years U.S.Navy.Not all of you know what I did while I was on Active duty so this post is about the military Medical Corp where I was a Medical Corpsman or medic in both branches of the service.Just what is a military Corpsman or medic and what do you do.The answer is you take care of all the medical needs of the servicemen and women and their dependents in whatever military unit you are assigned to just for starters. My military rank was a petty officer 2nd class.Except for officers I was addressed as Doc or Doc Rice. Here is Military history and what I did during my military service .I delivered 7 babies in the countryside of Germany too far away to make it too a hospital,Ive sutured soldiers and their dependents,Performed minor operations, started IVs,drew blood, performed laboratory tests in a military hospital laboratory, taken X-rays and ran a clinic x-ray department, put on and removed casts of various limbs, given shots, taken care of medical records, was supervisor of a Navy Hospital Supply Department, given physicals of military personnel and PA State Trooper candidates at US naval Hospital,Philadelphia,Picked up human pieces of a U.S.Navy flight crew and their 11 passengers from a U.S.Navy Cargo plane in the mountains of Sicilly. In a part of U.S.military history I was one of the 1st outside military personnel to arrive to help one of 2 aid stations triage & treat casualties shortly after the bombing of the Beirut Marine Barracks Bombing. Many died in our arms as we fought to save them. And yes folks sniper & artillery fire made things worse. In all 244 were Killed and 128 wounded. Some of those killed were Navy Corpsman during the explosion.Marines do not have medical personnel.Navy Corpsmen are their Docs. The 30 year anniversary of this forgotten piece of history was about a week ago and yes I still mourn the lives of my service brothers.I have never talked about this part of my military history not even my family until now. This post is for my brother military medical personnel no matter what branch of the service you may find them.Yes,I am a veteran and proud of it.Like all veterans we dont ask for your respect.Weve earned it!
