Common shoulder dysfunction part one. This short post series is intended to help those of you with shoulder issues identify what is causing you pain and how to take steps toward putting it right. First up is probably the number one shoulder pathology I see. Winging scapula As the name would suggest this refers to the bottom of the shoulder blades lifting away from the rib cage and indicates tightness in both the upper trap and the pec minor (the neck and chest in lay terms) Its important to know that in almost every circumstance that pec minor is tight and pulling the shoulder blade forward around the rib cage your rotator cuff ( the muscles at the back of your shoulder) will tighten. The combination of a tight chest and posterior shoulder then creates a suction like effect which pulls the head of your humerous (arm bone) into the joint causing impingement and pain. Heres what to do and the order to do it in. Roll pec minor Trigger upper traps Stretch posterior cuff Activate lower traps Then go training! If youd like a video showing how to do this drop us a like. If we get 50 likes Ill post a video this week. If you want to train at Storm feel free to get in touch on info@storm-fitness
