Communication aids Communication aids are assistive technology that help people who cannot speak. They can either replace speech or help with speech that is not easy for others to understand. The Medical Aids Subsidy Scheme (MASS) offers a subsidy for: artificial larynges speech generating devices communication software voice amplification devices. You will be provided with the basic accessories needed to use these communication aids. Eligibility To apply for assistance under MASS, you must: be a permanent resident of Queensland have a permanent or stable condition or disability hold a pensioner concession card, health care card or Queensland Government Seniors Card. You need to be assessed by a speech pathologist. They will work with you to assess your eligibility and communication needs, and trial appropriate devices before you apply. If you require specialised wheelchair or switch mounting systems, or specialised switches/accessing devices, you must also be assessed by an occupational therapist. Subsidy amounts and criteria The subsidy amount varies according to the item needed. If your item costs more than the subsidy amount, you will need to pay the extra cost directly to the supplier. How to apply You can either download and complete the application forms before your appointment, or wait until you see your clinician and ask them to help you complete the forms. To apply for funding, you need to complete: MASS 21 Communication Aids Application Form (PDF, 456KB) MASS 84 Proxy Access to Centrelink Information Form (PDF, 147KB). Your speech pathologist will complete a clinical assessment form, attach any supporting evidence, and submit your completed application to MASS.
