Former teacher and administrator at John McDonogh High School, Shawon Bernard, was one of a number of speakers at the event who voiced their concern at the handling of the schools rebuilding efforts since Hurricane Katrina. Today we stand to remember the storm that changed our lives, changed our city, changed our children and changed our thinking, she said. The recovery is not over. There has been a great injustice reaped on the citizens of this city and in particular the children of this city. We stand up for the children who have been victims and who have suffered in the last nine years. We stand up for the community who are demanding that this school be rebuilt and reopened to service our children.
