Community update: Myself and other concerned Harlem residents are organizing the neighborhood in wake of Daryl Washingtons murder. Our goals are: 1. To have the block where he lived renamed Daryl Washington Way. 2. To coordinate an annual event to teach our people about gun violence and come up with nonviolent ways to settle our conflicts. Weve met with a former member of Manhattan Community Board 9, and the commanding officer of the local police precinct. They have expedited the process of obtaining permits for our event. Weve also met among ourselves to determine what organizations to work with and to create a schedule of events for that event. Grassroots activism in my old neighborhood is inspiring our people, raising consciousness, identifying and grooming new leadership, breaking down ethnic and language barriers, converting the cynics, and developing Black and Brown solidarity. #proudofmypeeps
