Compline – The Religion I want: “...a religion whose greatness lies in her being hated by the world and not in her being convincing to the world; not in her seeking undue accommodation with the world.” What religion do I want? I want a religion that can tell me in plain language just what I have to believe and must do to be saved. I want the same religion which Christ Himself established; the religion which the Apostles preached; the religion for which the martyrs shed their blood in ancient Rome; the religion which St Augustine preached in England, Boniface in Germany, Martin in France, Patrick in Ireland, Francis Xavier in Japan, and to which these missionaries converted all these peoples from paganism. I want a religion that is a religion for all nations and for all time, even unto the end of the world; a religion that transforms cultures, not to be transformed by cultures; a religion that will always be hated by the world because her message is contrary to the ways of the world; a religion whose greatness lies in her being hated by the world and not in her being convincing to the world; not in her seeking undue accommodation with the world. I have found that religion and it is the One Holy and Apostolic Church. Let us cherish her. Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
