Composting Bins We are currently using 200 litre Dalek look alike compost bins to compost our vegetable scraps and vegetable garden slippings - adding layers of organic sugar cane mulch - sheep and cattle manure - poultry manure when we can get some - the top layers on this are handcut native ginger stems and leaves add vegetable scraps and orange skins from the last two days juicing. By using these recycled plastic compost bins we are creating a demand for recycled plastic feedstock - and encouraging Council and Waste Management companies to minimise the risk of plastics ending up in landfill. The experts tell me I should add layers of comfrey and borage leaves to add minerals and accelerate the decomposition process. I usually add a sprinkle of lime and gypsum during the month - Karen and I auger each Dalek monthly and let them compost for about 12 months before putting them on the beneficial bug and flower beds. Do you have any tricks you use to make good compost for your vegetable gardens and orchards?
