Concert Review: Robert Plant live at Wolf Trap 07.24.2013 Lively and loose all night, The Golden God, aka Robert Plant, entertained the masses gathered at Wolf Trap on a hot, humid Monday evening, performing alongside his current band, Sensational Space Shifters. As if designed by the Rock Gods themselves, a lightning storm broke out as Plant started the show with “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You” following with “In the Mood.” Joking to the audience to expect a “sedate, middle-aged attraction of REO Speedwagon covers,” the evening, instead was heavy on the Zeppelin songs, going deep into Led Zep’s catalogue and providing new and interesting arrangements on the songs. The band gave “Spoonful,” a Howlin’ Wolf cover, a raw and edgy treatment, while “Black Dog” began with Gambian musician Juldeh Camara playing a ritti. Plant’s original vocals on “Black Dog” were brought down to earth, and the call and response between Plant and the audience eventually progressed into a call and response between Plant and Camara. “Going to California,” one of the more mellow songs from Zeppelin’s catalogue, had the entire audience on its feet, singing in unison. Plant himself was in a fantastic mood, announcing “I’m singing good again” (I’m not sure when he was singing badly), dancing constantly, clapping along to the polyrhythms and admiring the musicianship of his band. Of course, the now-signature Robert Plant moves were still there – including several lifts and twirls of his mic stand – to remind the audience of his 40-plus year history in the music industry (along with an image of his younger self as his backdrop). With a beer in hand and high-fiving fans in the front row, the 64-year-old Plant exclaimed “You can’t imagine how great it is to have an afternoon nap and then do this! Ha!” While rumors continue to swirl about a possible 2014 Led Zeppelin reunion tour, Plant and his fellow Sensational Space (and time) Shifters left the audience with an “English folk song as a tribute to all you Saxons,” closing with Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll.” While a Zeppelin reunion tour may never come to be, the audience got the next best thing last night, and possibly the greatest tease ever as Plant, before departing the stage, exclaimed “Don’t forget! There’s no end to it!” SET LIST: Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You In the Mood Tin Pan Valley Spoonful Black Dog Another Tribe Going to California The Enchanter Four Sticks Friends Fixin’ to Die What Is and What Should Never Be Whole Lotta Love / Who Do You Love?
