Condos in Chelsea Village?? On January 12, Chelsea Council will consider an issue of wide interest across Chelsea, one that could have a significant impact on Chelsea Village. It is a proposal to change the zoning of a small parcel of land next to the former-Innovation Centre in order to permit a residential development there. The proposed changes would allow construction of a 3-story building comprising potentially up to 120 apartment units (max 13.35 units / acre) depending on the exact acreage available. The building could have a maximum footprint of 8500 square meters. Currently, the zoning allows 4 units per acre, max of 8 units in a multi-unit building and a maximum footprint of 1200 square meters. Council will meet at 7:30 on January 12 at the MRC building on Scott Road. You can find the draft agenda at the link below. The relevant item is 7k, at about page192: chelsea.ca/sites/default/files/conseil_12_janvierweb_0.pdf It is proposed that a Notice of Motion be issued and that Council adopt a first Draft of Regulation 914-15, which would amend the Specifications Grid to allow the kind of development project above. I do not support this first draft regulation. I am very concerned about the potential impact of such significant zoning changes on the nature of Chelsea Village. I think Council should take time to gather more information in order to assess this proposal and its implications for our Village. I also think Council should work with the developer and look at other options that would better respect the existing vision for Chelsea, especially after the extensive work and public consultation that was put into developing and approving the Plan for the Central Area of the Municipality as recently as 2011. Please tell your Councillor what you think. Or better yet, please come to the meeting.
