Congrats to our colleagues in New Orleans on the resolution of this housing discrimination case. Following Hurricane Katrina, St. Bernard Parish enacted an ordinance prohibiting the rental or occupancy of single-family homes in the Parish by anyone other than a blood relative of the owner. The Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center filed a federal lawsuit against the Parish in 2006, alleging that the ordinance violated race and national origin provisions of fair housing laws, as almost 93% of homeowners in the Parish were white.
