Congratulations to Dr Andrew Brooks who has been awarded a £10,000 Early Career Research Grant by the Regional Studies Association to fund a project titled: BRICs and Region Building in Africa: The Nacala Logistics Corridor. Andrew’s research will investigate an issue of the upmost topicality and world economic and political concern: the engagement of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India and China) in sub-Saharan Africa. This project will investigate how the Brazilian funded Nacala Logistics Corridor linking Malawi and Mozambique is influencing sub-national change to determine how large-scale BRICS investment in Africa is affecting local level economic development. Attention will focus on the interface between the geopolitical significance of the exploitation of one of the World’s largest coal reserves, national policy making and local economic change. This research will enable understanding of how new regional geographies are being forged by global competition for resources in Africa and how the local dynamics, form and shape of regions is influenced by national development priorities.
