Congratulations to the Xavier athletes profiled in Sundays Desert Sun. Excerpts below: In other volleyball news, Xavier Prep sophomore Alix Dreier has verbally accepted a full scholarship to play for the University of Pittsburgh. She is the first from Xavier to earn a Division I scholarship as a sophomore. “I visited Philadelphia with my club team (Club West Ontario) and I was able to see a bunch of different schools,” said Dreier, a 6-foot-3 all-DVL middle blocker. “I’ve seen Southern California schools, a lot of East Coast schools and I know they are going places. “They’re in the ACC and that’s one of the top three in the nation for volleyball. The town is passionate about all their teams, and I just thought it was amazing.” Other Xavier Prep seniors also have selected schools. In golf, R.J. Garczynski will play for Chaminade in Hawaii. Saints cross country standout Emery Caster will run for the University of Portland, and Valeria Ruiz will run for University of California Santa Cruz. “Both Valeria and Emery have experienced amazing success in high school, both having achieved all-state recognition (Valeria 2012, Emery 2012, 2013) and all- CIF recognition (Valeria 2011, 2012, 2013 and Emery 2012, 2013),” said Saints coach Aron Lyons. “Valeria was a member of the first team in Xavier history to win a DVL championship in 2011 and that same year was part of Xavier’s first-ever CIF-SS championship team,” Lyons said. “Valeria and her teammates were on the podium at Southern Section finals in three of her campaigns, taking second, first and second again from 2010-2012. Emery was a three-year varsity athlete who this year was captain of the first-ever boys’ CIF championship team in Xavier history. Emery finished third in the state in Division IV.” desertsun/story/sports/high-school/2014/05/26/coachella-valley-volleyball-players-college/9587391/
