Congratulations to the following members of the debate team for winning the following honors at the Thornwell Jacobs Petrel Classic Debate Tournament held with Oglethorpe in the friendly confines of the Martha T. Nesbitt Center Saturday February 1, which UNG won the overall award by a considerable margin: Novice Speakers (out of 31) 2nd Place, Pablo Picazo 3rd Place, Justin Franklin 4th Place, Taylor Robinson 5th Place, Matthew McElveen 6th Place, Darrelyn Thomas 10th Place, Ryan Little Eagle Molina 11th Place, Brissa Lopez 13th Place, Joe Perez 14th Place, Gabriela Batista Varsity Speakers (out of 32) 1st Place, Anthony Harden 2nd Place, Robert Johnson 3rd Place, Connie Rodriguez 5th Place, Corey Coffey 7th Place, Josh Keith 8th Place, Andre V. Gonzales 9th Place, Ashlee Rose 10th Place, Destin Chase Murphy 11th Place, Cale Hatch 14th Place, Fernando Gonzalez Novice Debate Team Awards: 2nd Place: Darrelyn Thomas and Abigail Word Semifinalists: Taylor Robinson and Gabriela Batista Quarterfinalists: Pablo Picazo and Chase Yarbrough Quarterfinalists: Ryan Little Eagle and Joe Perez Quarterfinalists: Justin Franklin and Matt McElveen Non-Advancing winning team (next team in): Brissa Lopez and Cristian Ramos Varsity Debate Team Awards: 1st Place (Champions): Robert Johnson and Anthony Harden Semifinalists: Corey Coffey and Josh Keith Quarterfinalists: Ashlee Rose and Andre Gonzales Quarterfinalists: Fernando Gonzalez and Maria Palacios Quarterfinalists: Cale Hatch and Destin Murphy Many students were attending their first tournament, and great improvement was seen by the veterans. All told, 31 UNG students participated, and of those, 23 won awards. The 31 awards won by UNG in debate at this tournament sets a new school record. All of the additional practice through rain, sleet, snow and gloom of night as certainly paid off! Thanks to the Communication Department also for developing the debate curriculum.
