Congress created a Veterans Choice Card program to help veterans get better medical care, sooner. The program allows veterans that cannot get a VA appointment within 30 days, or live over 40 miles from a VA facility to see a non-VA provider. The funds were allocated, cards distributed, but the VA is still managing to disrupt the program. As a personal example: I am 100% service-connected for Multiple Sclerosis. I called the VA to get a neurology appointment. The VA will not schedule a specialist appointment because I have not seen a VA PCP in the past 12 months. I have had 6 medical appointments in the past 12 months, but no PCP appointments. I agree to a VA PCP appointment, and I am informed the wait is 7-weeks. The VA will also not pre-schedule my neurology appointment in case my PCP does not agree I need to see one. So their plan is a 49 day wait, followed by an approximate 21 day wait.
