Contemplating todays Gospel Liturgical Day : Thursday XXXI Ordinary Time Gospel text ( Lk 15 , 1-10) : At that time , all the publicans and sinners drew near to hear Jesus , and the Pharisees and scribes murmured , saying, This man welcomes sinners and eats with them . So he told them this parable . Who among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, doth not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness , and go after the lost one until he finds it ? And when he finds it, he lays it on his shoulders , and coming home , call together his friends and neighbors together and says, Rejoice with me , for I have found my sheep which was lost . I tell you , just as there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety- nine righteous persons who need no conversion . Or what woman having ten silver coins and loses one , does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it ? And finding it , call together her friends and neighbors together and says, Rejoice with me , for I have found my lost coin . Likewise, I say unto you , there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents . Word of the Lord . Praise to you Lord Jesus. Comment: There will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents Today, the evangelist God s mercy exposes two parables of Jesus that illuminate the divine conduct toward sinners who return to the right path . With very human image joy , reveals the goodness of God who takes pleasure in the return of those who had moved away from sin. Its like a return to the Fathers house (like say more explicitly in Luke 15 , 11-32 ) . The Lord did not come to condemn the world , but to save it ( cf. Jn 3: 17) , and made welcoming sinners who with full confidence approached Jesus to hear him (Luke 15, 1 ) , since He I healed the soul as a doctor heals the body of the sick ( cf. Mt 9, 12 ) . The Pharisees considered themselves good and felt no need of the physician, and is for them , says the evangelist that Jesus proposes parables we read today . If we feel spiritually sick , Jesus attend and be glad that we turn to Him If, however , the proud Pharisees as we thought we did not need to ask for forgiveness , the divine physician could not work in us . Sinners feel what we do every time we recite the Lords Prayer because it say forgive us our trespasses .... And how much we have to thank him do it! Much thanks also we should feel for the sacrament of reconciliation has made available to us as compassionately ! What pride do not underestimate us . St. Augustine tells us that Jesus Christ, God-man , gave us an example of humility to heal the tumor of pride, since much misery is the proud man, but Gods greatest mercy is humble . Let the lesson yet Jesus gives the Pharisees is exemplary for us , we can not get away from us sinners . The Lord wants us to love as He has loved us ( cf. Jn 13 , 34) and we feel great joy when we may lead a wandering sheep to the fold or regain a lost coin .
