Context Time……..What can you garner from all the preceding preaching, physics, and particulars? Athletes - ONLY add weight to your body if it’s NECESSARY to perform your sport/skill/exercise better. A bigger athlete is usually a good thing. But using your off season to put on 20 lbs, while negating utilization of that new body in a basic set of sports skills/movements, is akin to reserving your spot on the injured reserve list and not the starting roster. Everlast athletes and normal folk – You aren’t TOO old, you are too far removed from your “fighting weight”. You AND the youngsters both have to ADAPT! Adaptation is a slow and ongoing process. A square peg will fit in a round hole, you just have to whittle the edges down, and that takes TIME! “Do what you’ve always done and get what you’ve always gotten” is often a negative anecdote. In the case of adding bodyweight, on purpose or not, its a reminder. You must do what you ALWAYS want to do, so you can get what you always get, which is…..not hurt. Squatting for 3 months straight will definitely help your acceleration and agility. But if you aren’t practicing those skills at the same time, the tears caused by a pulled hamstring, hip flexor, or groin, will prevent you from seeing where you are going.
