Contrary to the perception of some, redesigning streets to accommodate not just cars, but also buses, bikes, and pedestrians, can be done well and in a way that facilitates car flow as well as bus flow and safe bike flow. We live in a densely populated city in which people get around town in many different ways. The goal and challenge is to allow those people to get around and to have street design that accommodates all of them safely and efficiently. We can do that - for example, the Cesar Chavez redesign - and we have to do that. As San Francisco continues to grow, we need to make room for all transit options. Simply adding more cars isnt in anyones interest, including the interest of drivers. More congestion and more competition for scarce parking simply isnt a good option.
