Copy/pasted " Monika Folgerø As Egyptians were celebrating all around the world their victory against the Muslim Brotherhood’s hold of Egypt, I couldn’t help but notice the debate taking place on different News channels between it being a Revolution or a Military Coup. As I watched in confusion and to be honest a little bit of anger, there were only two things I was certain of: 1) The Foreign Media had no idea what has been going on in Egypt for the past year, and 2) No one is quite sure what democracy is. In order to understand what has happened in Egypt, it is only fair to go back to the past year and understand what our “Democratically Elected” president has done in favor of democracy. 1) Only 9 days after Mohamed Morsi took made his oath of office, in a bold move to defy the constitution and the Law, he issued a decree to reinstate the People Assembly, which has been dissolved by the Supreme Court, as it was unconstitutional. 2) On July 30, Morsi gave a presidential pardon to 26 leading Islamists convicts who belong to The Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Gama’a Al Islamiya. All of them have taken part in terrorists attacks, such as the massacre of tourists in Luxor, and are now the ones terrorizing people on the streets and spreading hate speech on religious channels. Thus, slapping the law right in the face. 3) On the 2nd of August, He appoints Hesham Qandil, an Islamic minister that does not belong to the Muslim Brotherhood, as prime minister. Qandil goes on to hire Muslim Brotherhood Members and allies in his government, with clear disregard to the national unity and competence of those ministers. 4) August 8, There was an attack on 16 Egyptian Soldiers in Sinai which left all of them dead. As all fingers pointed to Hamas or Islamists militants in Sinai, Morsi and Qandil turned a blind eye to those soldiers’ lives, while the public fumed at their loss and the government’s incompetence. The results of the investigation are still unknown. 5) October 11, In an unprecedented move, Morsi dismisses Prosecutor General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud from his post, and appoints another Islamic leaning PG in his place. While according to the Egyptian Law, the president doesn’t have the power to dismiss the general prosecutor. This move paved the way for more crime and terrorism on the streets by Islamists, while increased the crackdown on Anti-Morsi activists, most notably and recently Ahmed Doma. 6) November 22, in a textbook dictator move, Morsi issues a new constitutional declaration which puts him beyond the bound of judicial supervision. It shielded the constitutional assembly, which was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, and was made up of only Muslim Brotherhood members and other Islamists allies. It also shielded the Shoura counsel, which is also dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood. Finally it gives the president the power to change and appoint the prosecutor general every 4 years, guaranteeing the Muslim Brotherhood their godly status above the law. This caused some of the president’s advisors to resign, most notably all the seculars and Christians. This led to nation wide protests led by the national salvation front, 6th of April movement, Kefaya movement, and the rest of the non-Islamist parties and coalitions. Days later the Muslim Brotherhood leaders were inciting violence on TV, and urging their followers to attack the opposition in front of the presidential palace, which resulted in the death of 10s of opposition supporters. The Muslim Brotherhood claimed that those that died were pro-Morsi supporters, and the president gave a speech blaming the anti-Morsi ones. 7) December 2012, all non-Islamist members have boycotted the Constitutional assembly (which has been ruled un-constitutional), but still Morsi and co. rushed and finalized the constitution in one night. The next morning Morsi agrees to put the constitution to a nation wide referendum. The constitution passes through elections that have been highly rigged, as the Muslim brother denied foreign and private monitoring of the voting process. The actually hired lawyers who are islamist-friendly to overlook the ballots, as most Judges boycotted the election process. This defies all election protocols all around the world, and puts a big question mark on the Morsi and his regime’s legitimacy and democracy. January 8, Morsi tightens his grip on the country by appointing 8 new minsters including 6 from the Muslim Brotherhood. This caused more unrest in the streets, and protests became more intense. It has become obvious the Morsi only addresses “HIS” people, and only listens to “HIS” party, while calls all his opposition the remnants of the Mubarak regime and against the revolution. 9) March 2013, The Shoura counsel tries to pass a law in order to have new parliamentary elections as soon as possible, but the Supreme Court rules it unconstitutional again. Which just highlights the incompetence of the members of the counsel, as well as the Islamists who wrote the constitution itself, which now seems to be their biggest enemy. Additionally, Morsi gives a speech in Pakistan, which is ridiculed by Egyptian Pundits for being far from the truth of what is happening in EGYPT. In the meantime, Anti-Muslim-Brotherhood sentiment is rising, as we see numerous attacks on Freedom and Justice party offices. 10) June 2013, As the water Crisis between Egypt and Ethiopia become more tense, as discussion between Morsi and some of his advisors was aired live on National TV without them knowing it was aired. The Ideas proposed by the members of the meeting was nothing short of a mockery and charade by 10 year olds playing a video game. The meeting resulted in deepening the problem further, and highlighted how the president and the government were incapable of resolving this country’s issues. Making things worse, Morsi appointed more ministers in the cabinet from the Muslim Brotherhood, and appoints more islamists governors in Egyptian provinces which meant that 27 provinces where now under islamist governors. Most notably was the governor of Luxor, who is part of Al-Gama’a Al Islamiya that murdered 58 foreign tourists in the same province. 11) June 2013, Anti-Islamist activists start Tamarod (rebel) campaign, signing a petition that withdrew confidence from the president. By June 30, Tamarod had gathered over 22 Million signatures, 9 Million more than those who voted for Morsi in the elections. After briefly touching on what has been happening in Egypt during the past year, it is now a valid question to ask, “Which democracy do those news channels talk about?” Democracy is not just respecting the votes in the ballots, which the opposition did for the past year. It is a complete system, where the whole country is taking part in the ruling process. It is a complete system where the law is above all, and the constitution is representative of all majorities and minorities. It is a system where hate speech is prosecuted and free speech is not, not the other way around. So if you still think the 30 of June Revolution was against democracy then so be it, but you will be then acknowledging that Morsi’s regime was democratic. Finally, the first sentence of the Islamic written constitution was “The Legitimacy is from the people, and they provide legitimacy to all others”, so after seeing those millions in the streets, then for the first time ever a revolution is actually constitutional and once again the constitution is the Muslim Brotherhood’s worst enemy....
