First time in the Country setting a new trend, the YSR had recognized the importance of ambulances in saving lives and strengthened the 108 organization (Emergency Medical and Research Institute) and implemented the scheme throughout the state for carrying pregnant women and accident victims to the hospitals free of cost. DR. YSR had made available 800+ ambulances, appointed trained staff and provided Rs 1,12,499 per month for maintenance of each vehicle. As YSR government had provided all facilities for the 108 operations, its ambulance vehicles used to reach the accident spot within 18 minutes. Patients in need of emergency medicare, those injured in accidents and pregnant women were shifted to hospitals in no time and lives of thousands of people were saved. Beginning August 2005 till the end of 2009, ambulances helped in over 50 lakh medical cases and saved 75,000 people. Safe delivery was ensured to lakhs of pregnant women.
