Cotabato Agri sector shines in 1st Regional Biological Control Forum By Jimmy Sta. Cruz PGO Media Center AMAS, Kidapawan City (Oct 17) – Around 165 delegates from the Province of Cotabato’s agricultural sector performed well in the 1st Regional Bio-Control Forum held at South Cotabato Cultural Gymnasium on Oct. 15, 2014. The delegates were composed of Provincial and Municipal Agriculturists, Agricultural Extension Workers, Local farmer Technicians, Pests Scouts and others. The forum which was first-ever to be done in many years aim to promote awareness and information about biocontrol and the importance of biocontrol agents and biocontrol pest control to the agriculture sector in Region 12. The Cotabato delegates particularly the Tulunan contingents bagged the 1st place in Folk Media Contest which is the mode of communication in the development of rural areas where they received P17,000 and a Plaque of Recognition. In another category, Rey Galagpat and Allan Encarnacion of the Tulunan and Kabacan contingents respectively got the 2nd place and 3rd place in the Pest and Disease Identification where they received P1,500 and P1,000 and a Plaques of Recognition. Jennymar Edombingo, also of Tulunan contingents bagged the 3rd place of the forum’s Quiz Bee where she took home P1,000 and a Plaque of Recognition. Three more from the Cotabato delegation were given consolation prizes for Animation/Props Making namely Lemuel Pascual (small category), Benjamin Capalla (small category) and Romualdo Bautista (medium category). Aside from Tulunan and Kabacan, other contingents of the Cotabato delegates where from the Municipalities of Alamada, Midsayap, Kidapawan City, Libungan, M’lang, Pikit, Makilala, President Roxas, Carmen and some personnel of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg). The theme of the activity is “Biocon Agent: Katuwang ng Magsasaka, Tungo sa Mataas na Kita, Malusog na Pangangatawan at Malinis na Kapaligiran”. It also bears the slogan “Pestisidyo ay Iwasan, Biocon Agents ay Alagaan” which highlights the controlling of pests including insects, mites, weeds and plant diseases. It relies on predation, parasitism, herbivory, or other natural mechanisms, but typically also involves an active human management role. Bio-Control can be an important component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. The OPAg continues to implement programs and projects that improve performance and uplift the lives of the farmers in Cotabato which include those downloaded or funded by the Department of Agriculture (DA). For her part, Gov. Emmylou “Lala” J. Taliño-Mendoza said that the Provincial Government of Cotabato continues its mandate to help and support farmers for them to become more efficient and productive.
