Could last night’s explosion at a Blue Rhino propane facility in Central Florida result in a propane tank shortage here in South Florida? I’ve been making a round of phone calls for you to find out. So far the response I’ve been hearing from experts in the field is that a shortage is highly unlikely. David Mica of the Florida Petroleum Council said he does not anticipate a shortage in part because the Blue Rhino facility has two 900,000 gallon tanks that did not explode. Ned Bowman of The Florida Petroleum Marketers & Convenience Store Association said gas stations in the Orlando-area *might* struggle with a brief shipment delay but it’s his belief that South Florida won’t be impacted. We are hearing there were 53,000 propane tanks, the kind you use for a BBQ, on site at the time of the explosion. That may sound like a lot, Bowman told me over the phone, but compared to the size of the company’s operation it is not a significant number to majorly impact deliveries to South Florida retailers. Our sister station WKMG in Orlando is reporting that 8 workers were hurt in the blast and blaze, of those 4 are in critical condition.
