Could not agree more. If we really were a humanitarian country and wanted to stop people smugglers in their tracks, we would go to Indonesia, get the 10,000 people registered as refugees with the UNHCR and bring them here and resettle them in our communities. What a boost these people could be to so many rural communities. Children to fill places in the schools, extra money to spend in the shops, extra jobs to service infrastructure ... not to mention the extra workers to help in the seasonal nature of many towns. How about we do something responsible for once. Heaps cheaper than trying to keep these poor buggers off shore because we have all turned into paranoid maniacs, and far better outcomes for them and our communities.
