New CalFire update on the Lodge Fire. This fire is also threatening the Angelo Coast Range Reserve, a wilderness area operated by UC Berkeley that includes more than 4000 acres along the south fork of the Eel River. Faculty Director Mary Power said this morning the reserve is preparing to evacuate 12 researchers and equipment if needed. She said the fire is a couple of miles north of the reserve and with current winds is not heading in their direction. But, she said, if the wind shifts to the south, the fire could move in very quickly. The reserve contains many intact river, Douglas Fir/Redwood forest and upland oak woodlands habitats that are either extremely rare or no longer exist elsewhere. Professor Powers work, and the work of others based in this unique place, is well known among biologists. And (the reserve is open to the public) it is one of the most beautiful places to hike in Mendocino County. Please cross your fingers, says Power. cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_details_info?incident_id=1015
